MECCA (Memphis Educational Computer Connectivity Alliance) is a consortium of academic institutions within the Memphis, Tennessee area. Its organizing membership is composed of the University of Tennessee, Memphis , Universtiy of Memphis , Christian Brothers University, LeMoyne-Owen College, Rhodes College , teaching hospitals, The Planetree Center and the Memphis City Schools (East High School ). This group was conceived to:

• Provide network connections between academic institutions within this general area.
• Provide assistance to its membership in the process of making connections to the NSFnet Backbone (internet).
• Establish cooperative educational programming between its member institutions.
• Accommodate an educational partnership between a local area high school and the member institutions of higher education.
• Facilitate an information sharing environment via gopher servers, World Wide Web servers (Mosaic) and eventually a MECCA free-net system.

Since the inception of this consortium, NSFnet connection grants have been obtained by several members of this original group. Other grant applications are being prepared by recently added members: State Technical Institue at Memphis , Shelby State Community College, and Southern College of Optometry (pending connections proposal)
