Reference Angles & Basic Graphs of Sine & Cosine

A reference angle is the acute angle formed by the terminal ray of an angle and the x-axis.  The trigonometric functions of an angle are the same as the trigonometric functions of its reference angle except for the positive or negative sign.

Examples:

           Angle                     Reference Angle

  1.    50o                              50o
  2.  135o                              45o   (180o - 135o)
  3.  210o                              30o   (210o - 180o)
  4.  330o                              30o   (360o - 330o)
  5.  510o                              30o   (Coterminal to 150o;  180o - 150o = 30o)
