TASK:
Each group must write a report on a
mathematician
who contributed significantly to mathematics.
See The Greatest
Mathematicians of All Time for a list of mathematicians.
THINGS TO DO:
Get together and decide which person you want to write about.
Tell me by Friday August 22. Each group should have a different
person, so first come, first served.
Give some history of the person's life. Include some unusual
anecdotes,
if possible. Some of these people were unusual
characters and quite eccentric.
Include some of the mathematics your person worked on. If
he/she
was famous for some theorem or mathematical idea, be
sure to include that. I want to see the mathematics, not just
read that this mathematician worked on this idea, so find some you
understand..
You should use at least 4 sources, not all on the Web.
The paper should be typed and bound in a plastic binder.
Include your interview script and a resource page.
The rubric below should be the last page.
CLASS PRESENTATION:
Set up an interview with your mathematician. One person in your
group will be the interviewer and another will be the
mathematician.
The other members of your group will be supporting actors. They
may
be other people involved in your mathematician's life. Give about
a ten minute interview, then open it up to questions from the
audience.
You may dress appropriately for the time of the mathematician, if you
like. Costumes enhance the presentation and may help your grade.
Schedule of presentations for all class levels: (Papers should be turned in
the day of the presentation)
Group 1: September 15
Group 2: September 17
Group 3: September 22
Group 4: September 24
Group 5: September 29
