9th Grade - Algebra


TIME FRAME:

One week


OBJECTIVES:

  1. To determine distances from point A to point B utilizing the U.S. road system and automap software.
  2. To determine distances form point A to point B by direct flight (as the crow flies) utilizing maplinx software.
  3. To determine mileages needed to successfully complete an airline flight in case the route is changed due to inclement weather, including wind shears.

MATERIALS:

  1. IBM 586/75 Computers
  2. Automap Software by Automap, Inc. and Maplinx by Maplinx, Inc.

    INSTRUCTION:

    1. Students will be placed in teams.
    2. Each team will be given specific origins and destinations.
    3. The teams will use automap to figure the mileage between two towns (cities) via the U.S. road system.
    4. The teams will find the mileage between these same points using straight line (point to point) measurements.
    5. The teams will be given new mileage assignments due to rerouting caused by turbulet weather.
