SOLAR SYSTEM MODEL

DESCRIPTION:

Make a scale model of the solar system to display on the wall.


GRADE LEVEL - SUBJECT

9th Grade - Algebra


TIME FRAME:

Two class periods


OBJECTIVES:

  1. To provide a scale model of the solar system which can be placed on the wall to show the distances between the planets which circle the sun.
  2. To show the size of the earth in relation to the sun and other planets.

MATERIALS:

  1. Construction paper, computer continuous feed paper, or bulletin board paper.
  2. Meter stick
  3. Compass
  4. Markers

    INSTRUCTION:

    1. Students will be placed in teams and the one judged to be the best will be displayed on the classroom wall.
    2. Each team will use the medium of choice as to what type of paper their solar system will be drawn on.,
    3. The teams will use their compasses, markers, and meter sticks to draw to scale the sun and its planets as well as the distances between each body (7 cm will equal 60 million kilometers).
    4. The team with the winning model will have it mounted on the wall.
