AVIATION HONORS ENGLISH 9 ![]()
Ninth grade Aviation Honors English, is an essential part of the Aviation Academy 2000 program. It is composed of an interdisciplinary approach integrating the aviation theme with math, science, and technology reinforcing core English subjects. Communication skills---verbal, written, and electronic---are polished through research projects and report writing using curriculum collaboration with other Aviation Team Members and by the additional classroom resources gained through the Internet connection provided by MECCA.
Students follow the regular English 9 curriculum including reading The Odyssey, Romeo and Juliet, short stories, drama, poetry, and novels. In addition, the aviation theme is used when reading about exciting heroes, writing research papers, and when studying all literary genres. For example when studying heroes, students investigate aviation "heroes and pioneers of flight" along with literary heroes. When studying poetry, poems about aviation, flight, and adventure are included. Students even compose their own poetry about flight. As students go on field trips or flights, they are asked to reflect in journals and creative written assignments about the experiences. Each experience the student has is enhanced by their interaction with the other aviation teachers.
In collaboration with the Aviation Careers Orientation class, the ninth graders write a comprehensive paper entitled "How Does It Fly." This is the culminating product of the year in which they explore how something---birds, B27, balloon, rocket, --flies, It is research, technical writing and study of flight all in one project.
Aviation Honors English 9 does not just cover aviation terms, history, and poems. It also is designed to help students continue the mastery of the essential skills of communication. Emphasis is placed on developing strategies for effective expression in speaking and writing and for comprehension in listening and reading. Vocabulary thinking, and grammar instruction support these processes. Basic skills such as reading charts, maps and graphs, completing job applications, critical thinking skills, and reading for pleasure are stressed.
