AIRPORT RUNWAY FOAM

DESCRIPTION:

Turning a mixture into a compound. The foam used on at airports to put out or prevent fires on airplanes.


MATERIALS NEEDED:

1 tsp. baking soda 30 ml vinegar
1 tsp. alum clear plastic glass
1 packet unflavored gelatin safety glasses


PROCEDURE:

  1. Put on safety glasses
  2. Mix the dry ingredients in the cup. Observe the mixture. Could you identify and separate the materials at this point?
  3. Add 30 ml of vinegar.

OBSERVATION:


CONCLUSION:

  1. Did a chemical reaction occur?
  2. Feel the cup. Was the reaction endothermic or exothermic?
  3. What caused the chemical reaction? What was the catalyst?
  4. What does this new compound look like?
  5. How does having CO2 in the bubbles help put out a fire?

WRAP UP:

Wash your hands. Cups may be disposed of in a plastic garbage bag.
