TIME FRAME: 4 to 5 class periods

 

OBJECTIVE/S: 1. Research an individual element’s : a)characteristics, uses, and places found ;

b) atomic structure using correct number of protons, neutrons, and electrons in energy levels; and

c) symbol, element name, atomic number and mass number. 2. Use computer for research, word processing, and graphic design-saving on disk, and making hard copies on the printer.

 

MATERIALS:

Grolier’s Encyclopedia software

Microsoft Word

"Paint" program on Windows ’95

INSTRUCTION:

  1. Randomly select with class an element to research;
  2. Research an individual element’s characteristics,uses,and places found, using a encyclopedia CD ;
  3. Use a word processing program to type, save on disk and print twelve important facts from research on the element;
  4. Use a graphic program to design an atomic model using protons, neutrons and electrons in energy levels; save on disk and print;
  5. Use a graphics program to design a periodic square that includes symbol, element name, atomic number, and mass number of element researched; save on disk and print;
  6. Creatively place print-outs on a piece of poster board.
