Mr. Tom D. Schieffer, Web Advisor

Mr. Schieffer is a 27 year veteren of the United States Marine Corps who came to Wooddale High School to manage the NASA-Aviation Academy 2000 grant and to teach Aviation Technology subjects in the Aviation/Travel Optional Program.

Mr. Schieffer retired in 1994 from the US Marine Corps at the rank of Chief Warrant Officer (CWO-4). He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Engineering Technology from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, Illinois. He is a graduate of the US Navy's eight month Advanced Avionics Technicians' Electronics Course, and of the Instructors' Basic Course. He also holds an FCC license with RADAR endorsement,is certified to teach Aviation Ground School, and is currently attending graduate school at the University of Tennessee.

His various assignments while in the military took him to the Far East and to the Philippine Islands for duty as an Avionics Division Officer and Aircraft Maintenance Control Officer. He also served on the Norway (Air Landed) Marine Expeditionary Force Advisory Team and on various promotion selection committees. His last active duty assignment was at the Naval Air Technical Training Center in Millington, Tennessee, where he was a Curriculum Project Officer, Marine Liaison Officer, and Avionics Schools Assistant Training Officer.

Since joining the Memphis City Schools team, Mr. Schieffer has been instrumental in technical design, budget assignment, and new technologies instruction for implementation of the NASA-Aviation Academy grant. This was a $978,000.00 award to design and deliver multimedia based curricula via the Internet and a local client/server network. To date he maintains in excess of 200 computers in Aviation/Travel classrooms all connected to the Internet.

He is a member if the Marine Corps Association, Society of Manufacturing Engineers, Aviation Explorer Scout Advisor, and Golden Key National Honor Society for Engineers. He is active in the First United Methodist Church.

Mr. Schieffer is married to the former Ms. Janelle Christine Jones of Omaha, Nebraska and has three children, Luke and Amanda who still reside at home, and Mrs. Shanna Cook of Denver, Colorado. He also has a grandson, Jaxon Dean.
